Unmanned Aircraft Systems or Drones

Drones, also called Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), are widely used for tasks like taking aerial photos, mapping areas, monitoring farms, and more. No matter the purpose, there are rules you need to know before operating your drone.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires drone owners to register their drones. If you're flying your drone within five miles of the airport, there are special rules you need to know about, and you may need to contact the airport first. Most of Stillwater is within five miles of the Stillwater Regional Airport.

Before Flying Your Drone

To help drone users, we've gathered some useful resources to get started.

Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability (LAANC)

The LAANC system is a requirement for operating in a Class D airspace.

  • Request authorization with the LAANC system at least one day in advance.
  • Call the tower manager before operating.
  • Follow the rules and regulations outlined by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
